As a child, Owen had always been fascinated by excavators. The sight of one in action had always captured his imagination. But as he looked at the machine carving its way through the deserted hills, he couldn't help but feel a sense of melancholy. It was as if the excavator was tearing through the very essence of nature, leaving behind a scar that could never be healed.

Growing up, Owen had always dreamed of exploring the hills and the forests that surrounded his hometown. He would often spend his weekends hiking through the woods, taking in the sights and sounds of the natural world around him. But as he grew older, he began to realize that the world was changing, and not always for the better.

The hills that he had once roamed freely were now being torn apart by machines like the one he was watching. The forests that had once been teeming with life were now being turned into concrete jungles. The natural world that had once been his sanctuary was slowly disappearing, and there was nothing he could do to stop it.

As he watched the excavator move through the hills, leaving behind a trail of destruction, Owen felt a sense of hopelessness wash over him. He realized that the world was changing and that he would have to change with it. He would have to find a new way to connect with the natural world, one that didn't rely on the hills and the forests that were disappearing before his very eyes.

But as he turned to leave, Owen realized that he wasn't alone. A group of children had gathered behind him, watching the excavator with wonder and amazement. They were captivated by the power of the machine and the strength of the man who controlled it. And at that moment, Owen realized that the natural world was still alive and well, even if it was hidden behind the machines and the concrete.

He smiled as he watched the children marvel at the excavator, leaving behind their own small footprints in the soil. He realized that the world was changing, but that it was up to him to ensure that the next generation still had a connection to the natural world, even if it was a fleeting one.

  1. "leaving behind their own small footprints in the soil." I love that addition to the story. Adds so much hope. (I see I'm commenting as anon but this is Debi Swim at Autumn of the Soul)
