Dismay is a feeling that can consume us when we are faced with unexpected and unwanted events. It is an emotion that can grip us and leave us feeling paralyzed, hopeless, and powerless. I have experienced this feeling more times than I care to admit, and it never gets any easier. The thing about dismay is that it can sneak up on you when you least expect it. It can be triggered by something as small as a rude comment from a stranger or something as significant as the loss of a loved one.

In my experience, the best way to deal with dismay is to acknowledge and allow yourself to feel it. Denying or suppressing your emotions will only make them stronger and harder to manage. It's important to take some time to sit with your feelings and process them. This can mean talking to a trusted friend or family member, writing in a journal, or seeking professional help.

Another effective way to manage dismay is to focus on the things that you can control. In life, there will always be things that are out of our control. However, there are also things that we can control, such as our thoughts, our actions, and our attitudes. By focusing on these things, we can regain a sense of power and agency in our lives.

Lastly, it's important to remember that dismay is not permanent. While it may feel overwhelming and all-consuming at the moment, it will eventually pass. We are capable of bouncing back from even the most challenging of situations. We may come out of it a little bruised and battered, but we will also become stronger and wiser.

In conclusion, dismay is a feeling that we will all experience at some point in our lives. It can be a difficult emotion to manage, but it's not impossible. By acknowledging our feelings, focusing on what we can control, and remembering that this feeling is not permanent, we can get through even the toughest times.
