The Expected One

(Poetry form freestyle)

The phone consumes her, her eyes never stray
From the small device held in her silky hands.
She walks the path, the world a distant gray,
Her mind engrossed within the digital lands.

Around the bend, a boy waits on one knee,
A flower poised for her, a romantic plea.

Could it be time travel, a strange affair?
The girl and boy, decades and worlds apart,
Yet here they are, in a moment so rare,
Connected by a bend, a path, and the heart.

The boy's rosy cheeks and pink bloom declare
Love's timeless message, a story to share.

The girl, lost in screens, finally looks up,
The boy's charming gesture, a sight to behold.
Her heart beats faster, the world turns abrupt,
As the cellphone drops, its story now foretold.

Time travel or fate, they're meant to be,
In this moment, as one, for eternity.

  2. Pankaj, this is a wonderful prose poem. I think you captured the essence of the painting by combining the old and new in creative ways. That last line says it all. The only thing we need is a syllabic form to go with your freestyle poem. A cinquain would be a great addition and could take the reader to another (or deeper) layer of meaning. It's the juxtaposition between the forms that is often very powerful. Well done, my friend.
