Moonwashed Weekly Prompt #141 -Commotion

Upon entering the office, Sarah observed a commotion among her colleagues. Something felt amiss, yet she couldn't identify what it was. While heading towards her desk, she caught overheard snippets of quiet chats and anxious chuckles.

While attempting to keep her attention on her work, Sarah struggled with the palpable atmosphere in the room. The atmosphere seemed tense with everyone waiting for something to occur. Attempting to catch someone's attention, she glanced around only for her coworkers to avoid meeting her gaze.

Lastly, one of the people she worked with approached and whispered something softly into her ear. What was happening dawned on Sarah and her heart sank. Her colleagues were being let go after a round of layoffs had been announced.

As Sarah thought about her coworkers, she felt both sympathetic and apprehensive emotions. Imagine if she came after this? She attempted to push the idea away and concentrate on her tasks, but the noise in the workplace was impossible to disregard.

Despite time passing, Sarah remained plagued by a feeling of unease throughout the day. While watching boxes being packed and goodbyes being said, she wondered when her turn would come. The tension persisted despite the subsided commotion in the office. It was a stark reminder that their careers are fragile, and it's critical to remain attentive in an evolving world.

  1. Your scenario is very real and I've been in Sarah's position more than once. A superbly written story, Pankaj.
